There were the cool kids that sat at the back of the bus. There was this one black kid, Kevin Tracy. I still remember his name because I vowed to marry him in 1st grade. He was my only equal in basketball and we were both top of our game, though I fucked up my Catholic School regulation stockings each week for the sake (sake, not saki).
Anyways he really liked this girl, Jaime Arguera. She had really strict parents. They were very poor Hispanics that had managed to get their 3 children into private school and they were not willing to take risks to fuck it up. So they were TOTALLY not down with that whole first grade dating thing. Or third grade. Or eight for that matter.
So they had these hot yellow Sony Walkmans and I wanted one but my parents are socialists so I had to beg and make my life depend on it (which led to other dangerous life bargains) and we finally went to Macy’s and got one.
Me and Kevin never got together. He was totally intimidated by my super girl skills and him and Jaime ended up exchanging name bracelets by 7th grade.
Ugh.
